The mural adorning the exterior of Blooms Hotel celebrates James Joyce's famous novel, Ulysses. Its purpose is to promote the iconic writer and in turn, the hotel.
Taking the main character from the book – Leopold Bloom – and the hotel's name as a starting point, we worked closely with the book and created a contemporary design referencing 5 of the main characters and the themes that link them. As well as these, the architecture and main areas of footfall around the building were taken into account – the most prominent characters in the book were placed at the busiest / most visible areas.
The style of the piece is a mix of the graphic art prevalent at the time of the book's first release (Art Nouveau) coupled with a contemporary, bold, energetic, graffiti style.
The piece took 8 months to complete. Work began mid July 2013, with the final touches painted April 10th 2014.
