Man With a Movie Camera

I had forgotten how good this album album was and stumbled across it yesterday while getting old work off an external hard drive. Invigorating stuff, great music to work to.

Wiki info: ‘released on 26 May, 2003 on Ninja Tune. The album contains re-workings and thematic reprises of some of the music from their previous album, Every Day. The album comprises the soundtrack to a re-released version of the then ground-breaking 1929 silent documentary film, Man with a Movie Camera from Russian director Dziga Vertov‘.

The artwork for the cover is well handled. It is designed by DJ Food, who goes under the name Openmind Pseudonym when designing. Here’s a decent article on the piece.

Once a year I make my way back to my old college (the National College of Art and Design) to have a gawk at graduate art and meet old mates. As I studied Visual Communications while attending the college, I have a keen interest in the graduates’ work in this department.

I clocked the above poster while strolling through town on my way to work yesterday. I punched in the web address on my phone and it turns out its promoting the vis com grad class in NCAD. I love the piece. Nice and punchy wood block type, with an ambiguous, interactive element to it. Smart.

On the web page there's a link to the designer of the poster, Ross Coghlan – http://cargocollective.com/rosscoghlan For a graduate – in fact, regardless of that – he has a very strong body of work. Download his portfolio, it would put plenty of Dublin designers to shame. I got in contact with him about the poster and he explained that 150 of them were printed using letterpress type. As if they weren't nice enough already.

Came across this treasure trove of book cover designs all on one site. I've only had a quick mooch through it so far, but there's bloody heaps to get inspiration from. Very comprehensive catagories to choose what angle you'd like to navigate through all the information on the site too. Two thumbs up.

I was looking for Herb Loobalin’s recently, my studio mate Rob has a copy. It is something else, page after page of impressive typography and illustration. Right up my street.
So, I decided I wanted a copy of my own, I looked online and to my shock and dismay, it cost $140 on Amazon. Faaaak that for a lark. Silly cash.
For those of you whop don't have a that kind of cash to throw around, here is a decent Flickr album dedicated to the book. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nkeppol/sets/72157618401843508/with/3541861878/
Happy oogling.
